Sweet Rice Dish – Intangible Cultural Heritage of DPRK

 

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) — Sweet rice dish is one of the national food peculiar to the Korean people.

From long ago, they made sweet rice dish with natural medicinal materials abundant in the country and used it for their diet.

They used to eat sweet rice dish as a special diet on folk holidays like the January 15th of the lunar calendar.

The method of making the sweet rice dish is as follows:

Soak the glutinous rice in water for a while before washing and steaming it in an earthenware steamer.

Peel off chestnuts and split them into pieces, and boil seeded jujubes in an oven to make thick juice.

Mix honey evenly with the steamed glutinous rice, season it with soy sauce and add sesame oil, chestnut pieces and jujube juice to it.

Put it in a pot or hollow bowl and seal them.

And steam it in an earthenware steamer or big oven with water in it for a long time.

Then sprinkle pine nuts and cinnamon on the steamed sweet rice dish.

The Korean people also put into the sweet rice dish the dried persimmon, dried bracken, mushroom and walnut as well as chestnut and jujube.

The sweet rice dish has also been widely used for refreshment and medical treatment.

It is effective in lowering blood pressure, preventing arteriosclerosis and treating diseases such as scorbutus, purpura and chronic gastritis. It helps clean blood and increase the resistance of the body.

It contains protein, vitamins and minerals needed for improving nutrition.

Even foreigners like the sweet rice dish for its quality food materials, the peculiar method of making it, high nutritional value and pharmacological action.

It was registered as a national intangible cultural heritage in December 2016.
