Pickled Shrimps-Traditional Side Dish of Korean People

 

Pyongyang, February 2 (KCNA) — Fish pickling has long been a culture in the DPRK.

Pickled fish has frequently been on the table of Koreans for its saltish, peculiar taste and fragrance. In particular, they like pickled shrimps, known to improve appetite and contain rich calcium.

Pickled shrimps, popular in Phyongan Province, served as a local tribute and goods of trade with foreign countries, according to historical documents compiled during the feudal Joson dynasty.

The method of pickling tiny shrimps and various kinds of pickled shrimps are recorded in old books dealing with national traditional foods.

Koreans eat pickled shrimps as a dish served to go with boiled rice. They are also used as a spice for making kimchi and sometimes combined with green peppers and green garlic.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, who has paid attention to the improvement of the people’s diet, initiated the construction of a modern processing factory, which industrially produces fish pickles for the first time in our country. Thanks to his energetic guidance, the Kumsanpho Fish Pickling Factory, a foodstuff processing base capable of producing various kinds of tasty pickles, was built.

The factory produces more than 10 kinds of products with unique flavour, including pickled fishes combined with green peppers, chives and sesame leaves.

Recently, a new fish pickling factory was built at the Hanchon Fishery Station in South Phyongan Province, the best-known fishing base in the West Sea, under the guidance of Kim Jong Un. This laid another material and technical foundation for improving the people’s diet.
