Sleighing – Intangible Cultural Heritage of DPRK

Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) — Sleighing is one of the folk games of Korea which has been enjoyed by children from long ago.

Sleighing on ice or snow was already popular in the early days of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).

Sled was approximately 40 cm long, 35 cm wide and 10 cm high.

At the lower part of the sled were two blades made of bamboo, wire or metal.

To ride the sled, two poles were needed. Lengths of the poles 3 cm in diameter are as long as the sitting height of children and hammered to the lower part of the poles are iron nails.

A game of sled popular among the children was to return their starting point after turning the set point.

Today sleighing is widely conducted in various forms and methods.

Sleighing was registered as a national intangible cultural heritage in October 2017.
